The beginning of Diamond Grove Baptist Church was a Sunday School known as the Heber Sunday School. This was situated about a quarter of a mile behind the present church in a straw field in a tenant farmhouse that was owned by Mr. Jim Pinner. This school was started in 1899, but it did not last very long. In May 1900, a group of God loving sisters banded themselves together and invited Rev. Wilson Major Reid to come to a house owned by Stephen E Reeves to preach. These services lasted a few months and came to an end. In the fall of 1903, Mr. Henry Chance, and some dedicated brothers and sisters organized another Sunday School. This Sunday School lasted until June 1908. At this time, Rev. W. M. Reid, with the help of Rev. Johnnie Wrench, Alfred Wilson of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Hobson, Va., and other brothers and sisters organized a church, and it was named the Diamond Grove Baptist Church. An old store was purchased from lawyer Rawles near the site of W. C. Dailey's store. This store was repaired and was used for the church. The first revival held in this church was in August 1908. The evangelist was Rev. Bryant from Suffolk, Virginia. The first pastor was Rev. W. H. Reid, who served from 1908 to 1911. Rev. Reid served on the second Sunday for a while and services were later held on fourth Sundays, with Rev. Johnnie Wrench serving. Rev. Reid left in 191 I and Rev. Wrench was called to the church as pastor. Under Rev. Wrench's leadership, new members were added to the church. In 1916, Rev. Wrench's health failed and he passed in February 1917. Rev. W. H. Harris was called in March 1917 as pastor. He served fifteen months and left, Diamond Grove grew rapidly the few months that he served. Many ministers served before another pastor was called. Some of them were Rev. Thorne, Rev. Thompson, and Rev. Cogzale. Early in 1920, Diamond Grove called Rev. G. Z. Brown of Newport News, Virginia as pastor. Rev. Brown served well, and in October 1920 ground was broken for the new church on the same spot that this church now stands. The members were really proud of the new church and many new members were added to the fold. Rev. Brown resigned in the fall of 1921, and Rev. W. H. Harris was called again to pastor. He stayed only a few months and left. In 1923, Rev. Treat was called and he served until the second Sunday in September 1927. In November 1927, Rev. J. M Clark of Norfolk, Virginia was called, and he served during the years of the "Depression". As a result of his health, Rev. Clark was forced to resign. In 1945, Rev. T. H . Ash of Portsmouth, Virginia was called, and he served well. New members were added, more rooms were added on the church, and the first electric organ was purchased. In 1952, Rev. Ash left because of ill health, and passed in 1952. Many ministers were called to serve the church before one was selected as pastor. Among them were; Rev. C. C. Sharp of Tarboro, North Carolina, Rev. Obadiah Simms of Newport News, Virginia, Rev. C. C. Rodgers of Suffolk, Virginia, and Rev. Solomon E. Diggs.
In December 1953, Rev. Solomon E. Diggs an anointed man of God was selected as pastor and the members really worked well with him. The church grew in membership, spiritually, financially, as well as physically. Under Rev. Diggs' administration, a new piano was purchased, another Baldwin organ was purchased, restrooms were added, carpet was installed, new pews and pulpit furniture were purchased, the Pastor's study and a first aid room were added, the interior of the church was redecorated, new hymnals were purchased, a central heating system was installed, the school house was purchased for a fellowship building, a piece of land was purchased for additional parking. In July 1969, the church was bricked. In July 1974 the church was completely air conditioned. Rev. Solomon E. Diggs, Pastor Emeritus, passed in July of 1994.
On Friday, November 11, 1994, Diamond Grove Baptist Church selected Rev. Dr. Calvin A. Lillard, as our Pastor. Dr. Lillard is a born again, anointed gospel preacher and teacher. The church continues to grow spiritually physically, and financially. Under Pastor Lillard's leadership, a new roof, gutters and vinyl trim have been added to the church, new sidewalk and handicapped ramp with handrails have been installed in front of the church. The church fellowship hall has been remodeled and vinyl siding has been installed, a handicapped ramp with handrails have also been installed. The church purchased a 15 passenger van for church use. The church purchased 18 acres of land across from the church and plans are being made for future expansion and development of a new church complex.
Yes Diamond Grove Baptist Church started glittering in 1908, and continues to shine to the Glory of God.
